4월18일자 서울신문 일부 판과 인터넷 홈페이지에 게재됐던 백무현 화백의 만평에 대해 심심한 사과의 말씀을 올립니다. 당초 백 화백과 서울신문은 미국 버지니아 공대에서 벌어진 비극적인 총격사건과 관련, 미국 사회의 허술한 총기관리 실태에 대해 경종을 울린다는 차원에서 17일 저녁 발행한 지방판 신문(5·10판)에 만평을 게재했습니다.

그러나 이날 밤 만평이 적절치 않다는 판단에 따라 경기·인천권판(15판)에서 만평을 뺐습니다. 이어 서울·수도권판 신문인 20판에 망연자실해하는 교민들의 표정을 담은 만평을 새로 그려 독자들에게 배달했습니다.

문제의 만평은 또 18일 오전 8시30분 이전까지 서울신문 인터넷 홈페이지에 게재됐습니다. 온라인의 특성상 인터넷 공간에서 급속히 전파되면서 많은 이들에게 적지 않은 심려를 끼치게 됐습니다.

다시 한번 희생자와 그 가족, 독자 및 국민 여러분께 깊은 사과를 드립니다.

아울러 자숙하는 의미에서 20일자부터 백 화백의 만평은 당분간 쉬기로 했습니다.

● Apology

Seoul Daily and its Website carried an illustration by artist Baek Mu-hyun on April 18 in relation to the recent shooting tragedy in Virginia,the United States.

The illustration originally aimed to highlight the necessity of efficient gun control in the United States.

Recognizing the sensitivity of the situation,Seoul Daily replaced the illustration with one expressing the grief of residents in its late city edition.

We deeply apologize for any inadvertent offense the illustration may have caused to the families of the victims and the people of the United States.-Ed.
