  “유럽에서 가장 오래된 도시인 세르비아의 수도 베오그라드는 세르비아 고유 문화 뿐 아니라 오스트리아, 헝가리, 터키 오스만 제국의 영향을 받은 역사적인 도시입니다.” 네마냐 그르비치(Nemanja Grbic) 세르비아 대사는 13일 서울 중구 세종대로 주한 세르비아 대사관에서 “세르비아가 한국에는 잘 알려져 있지 않지만 베오그라드에는 발칸반도에서 제일 큰 성당인 성 사바 성당(St.SavaTemple)과 14세기 지어진 칼레메그단(Kalemegdan) 요새가 있다”며 이같이 말했다. 그르비아 대사는 이어 “세르비아는 유럽연합 가입 공식 후보국이며 ICT(정보통신기술) 분야가 빠르게 성장하고 있는 국가”라며 “세르비아는 ICT 등 4차 산업혁명과 지식기반 산업을 최우선에 두고 있다”고 강조했다. 남동부 유럽의 발칸반도 중앙에 위치한 세르비아는 오랜 내전과 전쟁으로 ‘발칸의 화약고’로 불렸지만 지금은 민주화가 이뤄졌고, 사회가 안정화되면서 디지털 강국으로 변모하고 있다. 테슬라 자동차의 원리를 개발한 과학자가 바로 세르비아계 미국인인 니콜라스 테슬라(1856~1943)다. 세르비아 화폐에도 등장하는 인물이다. 그르비아 대사는 한국과의 관계에 대해 “세르비아는 한국에 매우 우호적인 국가”라면서 “10대와 20대를 중심으로 ‘한류’가 빠르게 확산되고 있는 상황에서 양국의 교류가 더 많아졌으면 좋겠다”고 말했다. 이어 “최근 베오그라드에 한국 식품 매장이 문을 열었는데 이틀 만에 모든 물량이 매진되었다고 들었다”면서 “젊은 세대간의 여행과 교육 등에서 교류가 이어지고, 한국의 많은 기업들이 진출하길 희망한다”고 강조했다. 다음은 그르비치 대사와의 일문일답.    ▷ 세르비아는 어떤 나라인가. - 세르비아는 동남유럽의 교차로에 위치한 역사와 전통이 매우 풍부한 나라다. 북쪽으로 헝가리, 북서쪽으로 세르비아, 남쪽으로 불가리아, 동쪽으로 루마니아와 경계를 이루고 있어 역사적으로 때로는 좋은 영향을 받기도 했고, 때로는 나쁜 영향을 받기도 했다. 현재는 주변 국가들과 좋은 이웃 관계를 맺고 있다. 현대 민주주의 국가이자 유럽연합 가입 공식 후보국이며 경제가 빠르게 성장하고 있다. 한국과는 지리적으로 먼 나라지만 문화와 전통에 있어서는 상당히 가깝다고 생각한다. 앞으로 양국 간 협력을 강화할 수 있는 좋은 기반이 있다고 생각한다. 그리고 테슬라 자동차 테슬라 자동차 회사는 누구나 알고 있지만 테슬라의 원리를 개발한 과학자가 세르비아계 미국인인 니콜라스 테슬라(1856~1943)라는 것을 한국에서는 아는 사람이 많지 않다. 그는 세르비아 가정에서 태어났고 나중에 미국으로 이주했다. 세르비아 주요 관문이 그의 이름을 딴 니콜라 테슬라 공항이고, 세르비아 화폐에도 등장한다.      ▷ 한국인에게 추천하고 싶은 관광명소는. - 세르비아에는 역사와 문화 유산을 탐험하길 좋아하는 한국인들에게 추천할 만한 많은 관광지가 있다. 수도인 베오그라드라는 유럽에서 가장 오래된 도시이자 역사적인 도시로 세르비아 고유 문화 뿐 아니라 오스트리아와 헝가리, 터키 오스만 제국의 영향을 받은 곳이기도 하다. 베오그라드에서 꼭 가봐야 할 곳은 베오그라드 요새로 불리는 칼레메그단과 세계에서 가장 큰 정교회 중 하나인 성 사바 성당이다. 칼레메그단은 중세 시대인 14세기와 15세기에 지어진 것으로 도시의 문화와 역사의 중심지였다. 경치가 아름다운 사바강과 도나우강이 만나는 스타리그라드의 높이 125.5m 지대에 있다. 정상에서는 두 강이 합류해 흑해로 흘러가는 아름다운 모습을 볼 수 있다. 요새 안에는 박물관과 정원, 동물원 등 다양한 볼거리가 있다. 흥미로운 이야기는 이곳 동물원에 세계에서 가장 나이가 많은 악어가 살고 있다. 정확하게 몇 살인지 확실하지는 않지만 1, 2차 세계대전을 두 번이나 겪으면서도 살아남았다. 아마 100살 정도 됐을 것이다. 성 사바 교회는 세계에서 가장 큰 정교회 중 하나다. 100년 전에 지어지기 시작해서 몇 년 전에야 완공됐다. 1, 2차 세계대전, 유고슬라비아 전쟁 등 전쟁과 격동의 역사를 겪으면서 많은 시간이 걸렸기 때문이다. 13세기 세르비아 정교회의 설립자인 ‘성 사바’를 기념해 비잔티움 건축 양식으로 지은 대성당이다. 세르비아에 역사적이고 중요한 장소다.     ▷ 세르비아를 방문하려면. - 아직 한국에서 세르비아로 가는 직항편이 없다. 보통 터키나 카타르, 아랍 에미리트 등을 경유한다. 폴란드 등 주변 국가를 통해서 올 수도 있다. 치안은 여행객들이 다른 나라르 여행할 때와 마찬가지로 일반적 안전 사항만 준수한다면 안전한 국가이다. 관광객의 안전을 위협할 만한 시위나 전쟁 등의 상황은 없다. 세르비아는 매우 따뜻한 마음을 가진 사람들이고 외국인 관광객들의 방문을 좋아한다. 한국인들의 많은 방문을 기대한다.    ▷ 세르비아에 한류가 어느 정도 알려졌나. - 세르비아에서 자란 중장년층은 한국에 대한 정보를 많이 접하지 못했기 때문에 아직은 많이 알지 못한다. 하지만 10대나 20대와 같은 젊은 세대들은 K팝, K드라마, K무비, K푸드, K뷰티 등을 통해 한국에 대해 많이 알고 있다. 최근 베오그라드에 한국 식품 매장이 오픈했는데 이틀 만에 모든 물량이 매진되었다고 한다. 그만큼 한국 식품의 인기가 높고, 그만큼 한국에 대한 이미지가 좋아지고 있다는 뜻이다. 예전에도 양국의 관계가 좋았지만 이는 양국 교류를 확대하기 위한 매우 매우 긍정적인 추세라고 생각한다. 방탄소년단(BTS)이나 블랙핑크 같은 그룹이 인기가 많다. 세르비아에서 K팝을 온라인 등으로 판매하는 유학생들도 많이 있다. 태권도도 큰 인기다. 세르비아도 국제대회에서 태권도로 많은 메달을 땄다. 태권도 올림픽에서 2명이 금메달을 땄는데 결승에서 종주국인 한국 선수들을 이기고 금메달을 땄다. 세르비아에서도 태권도가 인기가 많기 때문에 앞으로 두 나라 간의 태권도 교류 등을 통해 관계를 더욱 돈독히 하고 싶다.     ▷ 세르비아에 유명한 스포츠 선수들이 많은데 - 세르비아는 축구, 농구, 배구, 테니스, 수구 등에서 세계적인 선수들이 많다. 대사관에 들어올 때 보셨듯이 테니스 메이저대회 23회를 우승한 노박 조코비치라는 아주 유명한 테니스 선수가 있다. 또 다른 선수는 NBA 덴버 너기츠에서 뛰고 있는 니콜라 요키치다. 이 두 사람이 요즘 세르비아에서 가장 인기 있는 스포츠인이라고 할 수 있다. 세르비아는 체격 조건이 좋고, 다양한 스포츠에서 매우 오랜 전통을 가지고 있다. 저도 테니스 등 다양한 스포츠를 즐긴다. 세르비아 테니스협회 홍보대사로 대한테니스협회와 다양한 교류를 하고 있다.    ▷ 좋아하는 한국 드라마나 한국 영화는. - 아내와 한국 드라마를 많이 본다. 한국 드라마를 통해 한국어를 배우려고 노력하고 있고, 드라마를 통해 한국의 문화, 특히 사회적인 면을 많이 배우고 있다. 최근에는 ‘킹덤’과 ‘글로리’를 봤다. 제가 개인적으로 좋아하는 드라마는 ‘서른아홉’이다. 저보다 조금 어린 세 친구에 대한 이야기라서 나이적으로 공감할 수 있었다. 이 드라마는 어렸을 때부터 친구들 간의 관계, 연인 간의 관계, 직장에서의 관계 등 한국 사회의 모습을 많이 볼 수 있어 흥미로웠다.     ▷ 세르비아가 디지털 강국으로 성장하고 있는데. 세르비아는 생명공학이나 게임 산업, 인공지능, ICT 등의 분야에서 굉장히 빠르게 성장하고 있다. 예전에는 농업이 우리 경제의 주요 부분이었다면 이제는 ICT라고 생각한다. 그래서 우리 ICT 기업들이 세르비아에서 설립된 ICT 기업뿐만 아니라 세계 각지에서 세르비아로 온 ICT 기업들도 많이 수출을 하고 있다. 4차 산업혁명과 지식 기반 경제와 관련된 모든 것이 우리 정부의 우선 순위이자 초점이 되고 있다. 한국은 디지털 분야에서 세계 최고 국가 중 하나다. 그래서 한국으로부터 배우고 싶고, 이 분야에 대해 교류를 확대하고 싶다.   ▷세르비아가 ICT 분야에 성장 비결은. - ICT 관련 인력이 부족한 요즘 세르비아에는 관련 교육을 받은 많은 우수한 인재들이 있기에 가능하다. 이들은 공학과 자연과학 분야에서 매우 훌륭한 교육을 받았다. ICT 분야의 경우 큰 공장이 필요하지 않기 때문 빠르게 성장할 수 있었다. 최근 세르비아의 게임 회사 몇 곳이 한국에 와서 한국게임협회와 게임 회사 등과 만났다. 게임과 e스포츠 강국인 한국으로부터 게임 분야의 스타트업들이 어떻게 하면 더 크게 성장할 수 있는지, 어떻게 하면 더 좋은 환경을 조성할 수 있는지를 배우고 싶다. 그래서 이 ICT 게임 분야에서 많은 교류를 할 수 있을 것 같고, 전자정부와 스마트시티 분야에서도 매우 강력한 협력 관계를 맺고 있다. 현재 세르비아에서 두 번째로 큰 도시인 노비사드(Novi Sad)는 한국개발연구원, 삼성SDS와 함께 스마트시티 역량을 구축하는 프로젝트도 진행하고 있다.    ▷ 젊은 세대 간의 교류를 활성화하려면. - 앞서 언급한대로 양국 간 여행이 중요하다고 생각한다. 또 하나는 교육 교류다. 매년 세르비아에서 글로벌 커리어 장학생으로 한국인 5명 정도 뽑는다. 이 외에도 대학원 석사, 박사 과정을 여기서 공부하고 있는 학생들의 숫자가 매년 늘어나고 있다. 매년 5명을 뽑는 글로벌 커리어 장하생에 500~600명 정도가 지원한다. 한국외국어대학교에 세르비아어학당이 있는데 매년 50~60명 정도의 학생들이 세르비아어를 공부하고 있다. 최근 세르비아 여행 인플루언서 3명이 한국을 방문해 한국을 아주 멋지게 홍보해줬다. 그들은 주로 서울에 머물렀지만 서울 외의 다른 도시도 방문했고 이를 세르비아에서 많은 호응을 얻었다. 세르비아도 한국 인플루언서들과 영화 제작자, 드라마 제작자들이 찾을 수 있도록 더 많은 노력을 기울일 생각이다. 세르비아에서 한국 드라마를 촬영하면 관광객들에게 큰 인기를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.    ▷ 세르비아 사람들에게 추천하고 싶은 한국 관광지는. - 세르비아에서 한국에 온 손님들에게 제가 개인적으로 가장 좋아하고 항상 추천하는 곳은 강원도다. 특히 속초, 강릉, 양양, 설악산이다. 서울에서 그리 멀지 않으면서도 아름다운 산과 숲, 스키, 하이킹, 해변 산책을 즐길 수 있다. 한국의 많은 지역을 방문했지만 특히 동해안 지역과 강원도는 이미 10번 정도 가봤고, 더 가볼 생각이다. 최근 제주도에 처음 갔는데, 제주도는 독특한 문화와 식생 등 모든 것이 다르기 때문에 꼭 추천하고 싶은 곳 중 하나다. 화산섬과 아름다운 해변, 바다, 그리고 흑돼지 삼겹살은 확실히 추천하고 싶다. 경기 파주나 판문점 같은 서울 북쪽의 아름다운 자연과 유적지, 아름다운 강 호수 같은 곳도 좋아한다.     ▷ 끝으로 한국인들에게 하고 싶은 말씀이 있다면. 인터뷰 초반에 강조했지만 세르비아는 한국에 우호적인 국가라는 점이다. 세르비아 국민들은 한국인들에게 우호적이고, 한국에 대한 이미지가 매우 긍정적이어서 더 많은 한국인들의 방문을 환영하고 있다. 최근 관광객뿐만 아니라 학생과 전문직 종사자, 그리고 세르비아에 투자하는 한국 기업들도 늘어나고 있다. 더 많은 한국 기업들의 진출을 희망한다.   Serbia, at the crossroads of Southeast Europe... Interview with Serbian Ambassador to Korea Nemanja Grbic [Hello World]   “Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, the oldest city in Europe, is a historic city influenced by Austria, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire as well as Serbia’s own culture.” Serbian Ambassador Nemanja Grbic said at the Serbian Embassy in Seoul on the 13th, “Serbia is not well known in Korea, but in Belgrade there is a largest cathedral in the Balkans, St. Sava Temple and there is a Kalemegdan Fortress, built in the 14th century.,” “Serbia is an official candidate for joining the European Union, and the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) field is growing rapidly.” Ambassador Grbic said, "Serbia puts the fourth industrial revolution and knowledge-based industries such as ICT at the top of its list." Serbia, located in the center of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, was called the 'powder keg of the Balkans' due to long civil war, but is now being democratized and transformed into a digital powerhouse as society stabilizes. The who developed important inventions in the field of electrical engineering was Nikola Tesla (1856~1943), a Serbian-American. He is also featured on Serbian currency. Regarding the relationship with Korea, Ambassador Grbic said, "Serbia is a very friendly country to Korea," adding, "I hope there will be more exchanges between the two countries at a time when the 'Korean Wave' is rapidly spreading, especially among teenagers and young people in their 20s." "I heard that a Korean food store recently opened in Belgrade, and all the goods were sold out in two days," he said. "I hope that exchanges will continue in travel and education among young generations, and that many Korean companies will enter Serbia." The following is a Q&A with Ambassador Grbic.  ▷ What kind of country is Serbia? - Serbia is a country with a very rich history and tradition located at the crossroads of Southeast Europe, which historically affected it both for good and bad. It is bordered by Hungary to the north, (Bulgaria and Romania to the East), North Macedonia and Montenegro to the South, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia to the West. Currently, it has good neighborhood relations with neighboring countries. Serbia is a modern democracy, an official candidate for EU membership, and its economy is growing rapidly. Although Korea is geographically far away, but I think it is quite close in terms of culture and tradition. I think there is a good foundation to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the future. And although everyone knows about Tesla cars, not many people in Korea know that the scientist who inspired Elon Musk was Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), a Serbian-American scientist in the field of electrical engineering. He was born into a Serbian family and later moved to the United States. The main Serbian gateway is Nikola Tesla Airport named after him, and he also appears in Serbian currency.  ▷ What are the tourist attractions you would like to recommend to Koreans? - Serbia has many tourist destinations that are recommended for Koreans who like to explore history and cultural heritage. Belgrade, the capital, is one of Europe's oldest and most historic cities. It is also a place influenced not only by Serbian culture, but also by Austria, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Just Ottoman Empire is enough, no need to put both Turkey and Ottoman Empire. The must-visit places in Belgrade are Kalemegdan, called the Belgrade Fortress, and St. Sava Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.  Kalemegdan was built it is much older than that, first fortifications go back to Celtic and Roman period, so it was built during an ancient era, and was the cultural and historical center of the city. It is located at an altitude of 125.5m in Stari grad Old town, where the scenic Sava and Danube rivers meet. At the top, you can see the two rivers merge after which Danube continues its flow into the Black Sea.  Inside the fortress, there are various attractions such as museum, garden, and a zoo. An interesting story is that the world's oldest crocodile lives here in this zoo. I'm not sure how old it is, but it survived two World Wars. Probably more than 100 years old.  St. Sava is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. It started to be built 100 years ago and was only completed a few years ago. This is because it took a lot of time to go through wars and turbulent history, such as World War I and II, and the Yugoslav Wars. It is a cathedral built in the Byzantine architectural style in commemoration of 'Saint Sava', the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the 13th century. It is a historical and important place in Serbia.  ▷ How to visit Serbia? - There are no direct flights from Korea to Serbia yet. There are usually flights via Turkey, Qatar, and the Arab Emirates. And we can also come through European countries such as Poland.  Security: Serbia is a safe country as long as travelers follow the general safety precautions as they do when traveling to other countries. There are no protests or wars that could threaten the safety of tourists. Serbia has very warm-hearted people and likes foreign tourists. We look forward to many visits from Koreans.  ▷ How well is the Korean wave known in Serbia? - The middle-aged people who grew up in Serbia do not know much about Korea yet because they do not have much information about Korea. However, younger generations such as teenagers and people in their 20s know a lot about Korea through K-pop, K-drama, K-movie, K-food, and K-beauty. Recently, a Korean food store opened in Belgrade, and all items were sold out in two days. This means that Korean food is so popular, and that the image of Korea is getting better. Relations between the two countries have been good before, but I think this is a very, very positive trend to expand bilateral exchanges. Groups like BTS and Blackpink are popular. There are also many Serbian students selling K-pop products online in Serbia. Taekwondo is also very popular. Serbia also won many medals in taekwondo at international competitions. Two girls won medals at the Tokyo Olympics, by beating Korean athletes, the home country of Taekwondo. Since Taekwondo is also popular in Serbia, I would like to strengthen relations through Taekwondo exchanges between the two countries in the future.  ▷ There are many famous sports players in Serbia. - Serbia has many world-class players in football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and water polo. As you saw when you entered the embassy, there is a poster of very famous tennis player named Novak Djokovic who won 23 major tennis tournaments. Another player is basketball star Nikola Jokic, who plays for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA. These two are the most popular sportsmen in Serbia these days. Serbians has a good physique and a very long tradition in various sports. I also enjoy various sports such as tennis. As a founder of Ambassadors’ Tennis Association in Seoul, I have a wish to initiate various exchanges with the Korea Tennis Association. ▷ What is your favorite Korean drama or movie? - I watch a lot of Korean dramas with my wife. I'm trying to learn Korean through Korean dramas, and I'm learning a lot of Korean culture, especially the social aspect through dramas. I recently watched 'Kingdom' and 'Glory'. My personal favorite drama is '39'. It was a story about three friends who were a little younger than me, so I could relate to them and their generational chalenges. This drama was interesting to see many aspects of Korean society, such as relationships between friends, lovers, and relationships at work from an early age.  ▷ Serbia is growing into a digital powerhouse. Serbia is growing very rapidly in fields such as biotechnology, gaming industry, artificial intelligence, and ICT. In the past, agriculture was a major part of our economy, but now I believe it is the ICT. So, our ICT companies established in Serbia, are exporting a lot. Everything related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the knowledge-based economy is becoming the priority and focus for our government. Korea is one of the world's leading countries in the digital field. So, we want to learn from Korea and expand exchanges in this field.  ▷ What is the secret of Serbia's growth in the ICT sector? - These days, when ICT-related manpower is scarce, Serbia is thriving because there are many excellent talents who have received related education. They received a very good education in engineering and natural sciences. In the case of the ICT sector, it was able to grow rapidly because it did not require a large factory and manual workforce. Recently, several Serbian game companies came to Korea and met with the Korea Gaming Association and game companies. We want to learn from Korea, a powerhouse in games and e-sports, how startups in the gaming industry can grow bigger and how to create a better environment. So I think we can have a lot of exchanges in this ICT gaming field, and we have a very strong cooperative relationship in the fields of e-government and smart city. Currently, Serbia's second largest city, Novi Sad, is also carrying out a project to build smart city capabilities with the Korea Development Institute and Samsung SDS.  ▷ To activate exchanges between younger generations. - As mentioned earlier, I think travel between the two countries is important. Another is educational exchange. Every year, Korea selects about 5 Serbian students as global career scholarship students. In addition to this, the number of students studying graduate master's and doctoral programs here is increasing every year. About 500 to 600 people apply for the Global Career Scholarship, which selects 5 students every year. There is a Serbian language institute at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and about 50 to 60 students study Serbian every year. Recently, three Serbian travel influencers visited Korea and promoted Korea very well. They mostly stayed in Seoul, but they also visited other cities outside of Seoul, and this was well received in Serbia. Serbia is also planning to make more efforts so that Korean influencers, film producers, and drama producers can find it. I think that filming Korean dramas in Serbia will be very popular with tourists. ▷ What Korean tourist attractions do you want to recommend to Serbians? - Gangwon-do is my personal favorite and always recommended place to guests who came to Korea from Serbia. Especially, Sokcho, Gangneung, Yangyang, and Seoraksan. It is not too far from Seoul, but you can enjoy beautiful mountains and forests, skiing, hiking, and walking on the beach. I have visited many parts of Korea, but I have already been to the East Coast region and Gangwon-do about 10 times, and I am thinking of going there more. Recently, I went to Jeju Island for the first time, and it is one of the places I want to recommend because everything is different, including unique culture and vegetation. I definitely recommend volcanic island, beautiful beach, sea, and black pork belly. I also like beautiful nature and historical sites in northern Seoul, such as Paju and Panmunjom in Gyeonggi Province, and beautiful river lakes.  ▷ Lastly, is there anything you want to say to Koreans? As I emphasized at the beginning of the interview, Serbia is a friendly country to Korea. The Serbian people are friendly to Koreans and have such a positive image of Korea that more Koreans are welcome to visit. Recently, not only tourists, but also students, professionals, and Korean companies interested in Serbia are on the rise. <편집자 주> 지구촌 별별 이야기를 담는 나우뉴스는 외국인 오피니언 리더들의 눈과 입을 통해 세계의 다양하고 유익한 정보를 전하는 ‘헬로 월드’ 연재를 시작합니다. 인터뷰는 유엔공식벤더로 인정받은 통역번역 전문법인 (주)제이엠 커넥티드 임지민 대표와 함께 진행합니다. 이화여대 통번역대학원에서 공부한 임 대표는 국가기관과 글로벌 기업, 대학, 산업 분야에서 열리는 다양한 국제행사에서 통·번역 서비스를 제공하고 있습니다.  아프리카 국가 최초로 2022년 카타르 월드컵에서 4강 돌풍을 일으킨 모로코가 유엔군의 일원으로 6·25 한국전쟁에 참전한 사실이 확인되면서 큰 관심을 끌고 있다.  모로코가 프랑스 보호령이던 당시 국왕인 모하메드 5세는 모로코 국민들에게 프랑스와 동맹국의 자유 수호를 위해 프랑스군에 입대할 것을 권고했고, 이 가운데 일부가 유엔군 일원으로 1950년 한국전쟁에 참전했다.  샤픽 하샤디 주한 모로코왕국 대사는 27일 “모로코는 1962년 아프리카 국가 중 가장 먼저 한국과 수교를 체결한 국가로 60년 넘게 정치, 경제, 문화 등 많은 분야에서 활발한 교류를 이어가고 있다”면서 “모로코 군인 일부가 유엔군 일원으로 한국전쟁에 참여하는 등 두 나라는 이미 수교 이전부터 각별한 관계를 형성했다”고 말했다.  하샤디 대사는 “모로코는 한국과 멀리 떨어진 국가이지만 역사와 문화, 전통, 신념 등에서 많은 공통점을 가진 국가”라며 “한국의 문화가 아랍 국가에 한류열풍을 불러 일으키고 있고, 모로코의 풍부한 관광자원이 많은 한국 관광객들의 관심을 받고 있다”고 덧붙였다.  하샤디 대사는 앞으로 자동차 산업, 항공분야, 신재생에너지, 보건 분야에서 더 많은 많은 교류를 기대하고 있다.  모로코는 아프리카 북서단에 있는 입헌군주제 국가로 정식명칭은 모로코왕국(Kingdom of Morocco)이다. 수도는 라바트이며, 1962년 한국과 수교를 체결했다. 1993년 비자면제협정을 체결하면서 양국의 관공 교류로 활발하게 이뤄지고 있다. 한국 사람들에게는 영화 ‘카사블랑카’를 떠올리고, 최근 재개봉한 영화 ‘모가디슈’, 드라마 ‘배가본드’ 촬영지로도 친숙하다. 특히 2022년 카타르 월드컵에서는 아프리카 국가로는 최초로 4강에 진출하는 쾌거를 이뤄내며 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 한국이 아시아 최초로 2002년 한일 월드컵에서 4강에 오른 뒤 20년 만에 아프리카 축구에서 새로운 이정표를 세운 셈이다. 샤픽 하샤디 주한 모로코왕국 대사 인터뷰를 문화·관광과 정치·경제 분야로 나눠 두차례에 걸쳐 연재한다. 다음은 하샤디 대사와의 일문일답.  ▷ 아프리카 국가 최초로 월드컵 4강 신화를 달성한 비결은. - 아프리카 국가 월드컵 준결승 신화는 모로코의 기적이자 꿈이었고, 엄청난 순간이었다. 아랍 세계의 잠재력을 전세계에 보여준 역사였다. 특별한 비법은 없다. 모든 모로코, 아랍 및 아프리카 국가의 지원과 함께 결단력, 인내, 의지, 팀워크의 결과였다.  ‘아틀라스 라이온즈’(모로코 국가대표팀 별칭)는 눈부신 활약으로 모든 국민들에게 감동과 애국심을 선사했다. 1999년 모하메드 6세 국왕 즉위 이후 국가 근대화 과정이 정치에서 사회, 스포츠에 이르기까지 모든 영역에서 추진됐다.  축구도 이러한 과정에서 벗어나지 않았다. 국가 차원에서 젊은 모로코인들이 스포츠 및 학업에서 능력을 발휘할 수 있도록 아카데미와 시설의 개발을 장려했다.  ▷ 월드컵을 계기로 모로코에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는데.  - 실제 한국에서 모로코에 대한 관심이 점차 높아지고 있다는 점은 눈에 띈다. 모로코는 수세기에 걸쳐 내려오는 문화적 다양성, 예술, 영화, 음악 등을 축적하고 있고, 여러 유형의 유네스코 세계 유산이 국제적인 관심을 끌고 있다. 많은 사람들이 모로코의 자연, 역사, 예술, 모로코식 환대에 매료돼 찾고 있다. 모로코는 항상 다양한 문명, 신념 및 문화의 교차로였으며, 아랍, 지중해 및 아프리카 기원의 용광로였다. 페니키아인, 카르타고인, 로마인, 반달족이 이 땅을 거치면서 다양한 문명과 문화가 스며들었다. 이 같은 문화적 다양성은 과거, 잠재 의식 및 문화에 잘 묻혀 있고, 이는 일상 언어, 사실 및 몸짓, 심지어 종교적 신념에서도 찾을 수 있다.  ▷ 모로코에 한국 문화는 얼마나 잘 알려져 있나. - 한류는 세계 여러 지역에서 인기를 얻고 있다. 모로코에서도 최근 몇 년 동안 한국 드라마, 음악, 패션이 젊은 세대 사이에서 많은 인기를 얻고 있다. 모로코를 포함한 아랍 국가 전역의 많은 대학에서는 한국어를 배울 수 있다.  K-드라마는 모로코에서 점점 인기를 얻고 있으며 많은 모로코인들이 시청한다. K-드라마의 인기는 모로코 사람들이 한국어를 배우고 드라마에 나오는 언어와 문화를 더 잘 이해할 수 있도록 했고, 모로코에 한국어 학교를 개설하는 계기가 됐다.  방탄소년단(BTS), 블랙핑크(Blackpink), 엑소(EXO) 등 K팝 그룹의 인기가 높아지면서 한국 음악도 모로코에서 많은 팬을 확보했다. 모로코 K팝 팬들은 팬클럽을 결성하고 좋아하는 그룹을 축하하기 위해 이벤트와 모임을 개최한다.  한국 패션도 모로코에서 인기를 끌었다. 한류는 한국의 엔터테인먼트와 문화를 수용하는 젊은 세대들 사이에서 모로코 문화에 상당한 영향을 미치고 있다.  또한 모로코인들은 한국인과 그들의 문화에 대해 긍정적인 시각을 가지고 있다. 모로코에서 한국인이라고 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 것은 시민들의 근면함이다.  한국인들의 다른 사람에 대한 존중, 화합, 근면, 자기 수양을 우선시하는 문화적 가치와 전통은 어릴 때부터 교육, 가족 및 사회 제도를 교육을 받는다.  위계와 권위에 대한 존중과 직업 윤리, 직업에 대한 헌신으로 유명하다. 한국인들은 종종 오랜 시간 일하고 그 일을 매우 진지하게 받아들인다. 일에 대한 이러한 헌신은 경쟁이 치열하고 학업 성취도를 강조하는 교육 시스템에도 반영된다.  전반적으로 한국인의 행동은 강한 의무감과 책임감, 타인에 대한 존중, 근면과 자기 수양에 대한 헌신이 특징이다.  ▷ 한국인에게 추천하고 싶은 모로코 여행지는. - 우리는 모든 관광 상품에 ‘환경적 요소와 사회적 요소’를 중시한다고 생각한다. 관광객들이 관광을 통해 진정한 성찰을 할 수 있게 한다. 아틀라스 산맥에서 대서양 해변, 사막의 고요함에서 활기찬 도시 등 자연과 문화, 건축, 역사, 전통 등 많은 관광 자원을 가진 나라 중 하나다. 기후, 토양, 문화 다양성과 관련된 광범위한 자산을 보유하고 있다. 2023년 워싱턴 포스트에 따르면 모로코는 세계 최고의 여행지 중 하나로 선정됐다. 그런 점에서 한국 관광객들에게 유럽의 다른 도시들과는 다른 특별한 경험을 할 수 있는 마라케시, 와르자자트, 라윤, 다클라 등 남부 도시들을 추천하고 싶다. 황토색 모래 언덕과 바위 첨탑이 이루는 광대한 풍경은 등산객과 사진작가의 마음을 사로잡을 것입니다.  ▷ 한국 생활에 대해 이야기한다면 한국에 대한 인상은. - 한국은 대사로 근무한 국가 이상이다. 내 아이들이 자란 나라다. 우리가 처음 왔을 때 막내는 13살이었는데 지금은 19살이다. 그는 한국을 제2의 나라로 생각한다. 실제로 한국은 문화가 풍부하고 역사에 상당한 중요성을 부여하는 매혹적인 나라다. 내가 한국 문화에 대해 가장 좋아하는 점은 다른 종교와 문화가 혼합되어 상대적으로 동질적이라는 것이다. 다른 사람을 받아들이고 그들의 삶의 방식을 존중하는 것은 한국 문화에서 본질적으로 얻어지는 성숙이다. 좋아하는 한식을 묻는다면 망설임 없이 비빔밥이다. 비빔밤을 가르쳐준 딸과 소소한 이야기(a tête à tête)를 나누며 함께 즐겨 먹는다. 하지만 한국에서 보낸 모든 순간을 사랑하는 법을 배웠다. 주말에 나는 도시를 내려다보기 위해 남산타워에 올라간다. 결론적으로 한국은 독특한 분위기를 가지고 있고 나를 놀라게 하는 것을 멈추지 않는 나라라고 말할 수 있다. ▷ 한국과 모로코의 유사점은 무엇인가. - 비록 모로코는 한국과 꽤 멀리 떨어져 있지만 이곳에서 보낸 지난 몇 년은 우리가 여러 면에서 얼마나 비슷한지를 깨닫게 해주었다. 무엇보다 한국에서 높게 평가되는 가족관계와 의존성은 모로코의 가치관과 유사하다. 양국 모두 가족을 매우 중요하게 생각하고 연장자를 존경한다. 또한 근면과 근면, 효도, 겸손을 중요한 가치로 삼는다. 유교 철학은 개인의 행복보다 가족의 화합을 우선시함으로써 한국의 전통적인 가족 구조를 형성했다. 많은 한국인들이 자기표현보다 가족의 중요성을 강조하는데 모로코도 마찬가지다. 우리는 뿌리 깊은 전통, 가치 및 신념을 가진 다양한 부분으로 구성된 다문화 사회다. 공통적으로 영토를 회복한 역사를 가지고 있다. 나는 독립을 위해 조선 각지에서 자발적으로 일어난 평화적인 운동인 1919년 3.1절을 예로 들고 싶다. 이는 1975년 모로코 녹색 행진을 떠올리게 한다. 이 운동은 우리 남부 지방의 평화로운 해방으로 이어졌다. 그것은 모로코 역사상 가장 중요한 사건의 하나로 모로코 왕국의 영토 보전을 완성하는 이정표가됐다. 두 사례는 양국 모두 독립을 위해 같은 길을 걸었다는 것을 보여준다.Interview with H.E. Dr. Chafik RACHADI, Ambassador of His Majesty the King of Morocco to the Republic of Korea    ▷ Congratulations on becoming the first African country to achieve the World Cup semi-final myth.  What is the secret to reaching the semifinals? - With pride, I here recall that my country’s football team is the first Arab and African nation ever to reach the semifinals of the FIFA competitions organized for the first time in an Arab country (Qatar). Joy was overwhelming all Moroccans all over the world, all Arab and African nations throughout the globe. This was a magical wish of every Arab and African country. There was no secret behind. It was the result of determination, perseverance, will and teamwork, along with the support of all Moroccans, Arab and African nations. It was a Moroccan miracle and dream, a mountainous moment, a potential history for a country, for a continent and for the Arab world. The Atlas Lions have portrayed unbelievable emotions and values among all nations around the globe through their brilliant performance, having with them their mothers who have instilled them the values of patriotism and sacrifice. To be noted that this achievement was a further demonstration of the support of His Majesty the King for sport and football in Morocco. Since the King´s accession to the throne in 1999, the process of national modernization undertaken by His Majesty has encompassed all areas, from the political to the social, as well as the sporting. Football has not been left out of this process of evolution, and the national authorities have encouraged the development of academies and facilities that have fostered the sporting and academic development of young Moroccans.▷ Morocco's culture seems to be less well known in Korea. Can you tell us what kind of county it is? - In fact, it is noticeable that Morocco is becoming increasingly popular within Korean society, especially in recent years. This can be explained by the fact that Moroccan culture fascinates the world by its diversity, art, cinema, music, and history that goes back centuries. With several dynasties that have succeeded one another over the years (the Idrisside dynasty, Almoravid, Almohad, Merinid, Saadian and the Alaouite) Morocco has gained international consideration as a multicultural country, with several types of heritage recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO. Morocco is one of the go-to destinations for discovery lovers, the most fascinated by nature, history, the art of living and Moroccan hospitality. The experience gained during their journeys in Morocco leave them pleasantly satisfied with their stay. Morocco has always been the crossroads of different civilizations, beliefs, and cultures, a melting pot of Amazigh, Arab, Mediterranean and African origins, has seen the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Vandals pass through its lands. As a result, it has been impregnated with different civilizations and cultures. These shares between societies, languages, traditions, and customs allow Morocco to have a vibrant culture that includes several other specificities. Thus cultural diversity is not new for Moroccans, but its notion is well buried in its past, subconscious, and culture. This notion can be detected in its daily language, facts and gestures, and even its religious beliefs, without forgetting its material and immaterial heritage.▷ How well is Korean culture known in Morocco? What do Moroccan people think of Korea What Korean Wave content would the Moroccans like? - Rich by its millenary history, Morocco has always known how to take advantage of the contributions of the societies it has lived alongside and absorb them.Globalization, migration, and the evolution of the contemporary world project the Moroccan society towards new horizons where tradition and modernity meet.  Also, Korea's cultural diplomacy has brought the Hallyu wave to Arab countries. K-Drama, K-pop, and Korean food appear all over these countries. In addition, many universities all over Arab countries offer the Korean language for study, including my own country, the Kingdom of Morocco.  The Korean wave, also known as Hallyu, has been gaining popularity in many parts of the world, including Morocco. In recent years, Korean drama, music, and fashion have gained many followers in Morocco, especially among younger generations.  Korean dramas, also known as K-dramas, have become increasingly popular in Morocco, with many Moroccans tuning in to watch their favorite shows. The popularity of K-dramas has led to the opening of Korean language schools in Morocco, where Moroccans can learn Korean and better understand the language and culture portrayed in the dramas.  Korean music has also gained many followers in Morocco, with K-pop groups such as BTS, Blackpink, and EXO becoming increasingly popular. Moroccan fans of K-pop have formed their own fan clubs and hold events and gatherings to celebrate their favorite groups.  In addition to K-drama and K-pop, Korean fashion has also become popular in Morocco. Korean street style, in particular, has gained many followers among Moroccan youth who are drawn to the unique and trendy clothing styles. Overall, the Korean wave has been making a significant impact on Moroccan culture, especially among younger generations who are embracing Korean entertainment and culture.  Also, Moroccans have a positive view of Koreans and their culture. It is important to remember that all individuals, regardless of their ethnicity or nationality, are unique and should not be stereotyped or generalized. In Morocco when we talk about Koreans, the first thing that comes to our mind is the hard work and the good behavior of the citizens.  We believe that the behavior of the Korean people is shaped by their cultural values and traditions, which prioritize respect for others, harmony, hard work, and self-discipline. These values are instilled in Koreans from their early years through education, family, and social institutions.  Another aspect of the Korean behavior is their respect for hierarchy and authority. This is reflected in the way they speak to and interact with those who are older or of higher social status.  Koreans are known for their work ethic and dedication to their jobs. They often work long hours and take their work very seriously. This dedication to work is also reflected in their education system, which is highly competitive and emphasizes academic achievement.  Another aspect of the Korean behavior is their emphasis on cleanliness. Koreans take great pride in keeping their homes and public spaces. Overall, the behavior of Koreans is characterized by a strong sense of duty and responsibility, respect for others, and a dedication to hard work and self-discipline.  ▷ Which Moroccan destination do you want to recommend to the Korean people? - We believe it is necessary that “environmental and social element” be inscribed among the foundations of all tourist products. This allows us to undertake a real reflection on the products to introduce to the tourists. The search for a real match between supply and demand is essential.  From the Atlas Mountains to the Atlantic beaches, from the silence of the desert to the lively cities... nature, culture, architecture, history, tradition of hospitality... few countries in the world concentrate so many riches. Morocco is one of them.  The Kingdom has a wide range of tourist assets linked to the diversity of its climate, relief, soil and culture. In 2023, Morocco is ranked among the top travel destinations in the world according to the Washington Post.  In this regard, I would recommend to Korean tourists, the southern cities (Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Laayoune, Dakhla…) where they will enjoy special experiences much different from what they can find in other European cities. In this part of Morocco, the magic happens! The immensity of these landscapes of ochre dunes and rocky spires will fascinate the hiker as well as the photographer. ▷ If you were to talk about life in Korea, what is your impression of Korea ? What is your favorite Korean culture, food and tourist attraction? - The Republic of Korea is more than an accreditation country for me. It is the country where my children grew up. My youngest was 13 years old when we first came. Today, he's nearly 19. He considers Korea as his second country.  Indeed, Korea is a fascinating country, rich in culture and gives considerable importance to its history. What I like most about Korean culture is that it is relatively homogeneous, with a mixture of different religions and cultures. Acceptance of others and respect for their way of life is a maturity acquired essentially in Korean culture.  If you ask me about my favorite Korean dish, I will answer without hesitation that it is the “Bibimpap” because I learned to enjoy it every time I went out for “a tête à tête” with my daughter, who taught me to love it.  Although, I learned to love every little moment I spent in Korea. My perfect plan for the weekend was to go all the way up to “Namsan Tower” to have a bird's eye view of the city.  In conclusion, I could say that Korea is a country that has a unique vibe and never stops surprising me, that's why it holds an exceptional place in my heart.  ▷ What are the similarities between Korea and Morocco? - Even if Korea is quite far from Morocco, these last few years I spent here made me notice how similar we are in many ways. Foremost, the close family ties and dependencies valued so highly in Korea are similar to Moroccan values.  We both give great importance to family and respect elders. In addition, we admire diligent and hard work, filial piety, and humbleness. Confucian philosophy defined the traditional Korean family structure, by placing family harmony over individual happiness. Many Koreans emphasized the importance of family rather than self-expression, which is the same in Morocco.  We are multicultural societies composed of many different parts with deeply rooted traditions, values, and beliefs.  In the common history marked by the desire to recover our territories, I quote the example of the March 1st Movement in Korea, with its peaceful demonstrations that spontaneously broke out in 1919 throughout Korea to affirm to the whole world the hope and ardent desire of the Korean people for independence. This reminds us of the Moroccan Green March of 1975, which also led to the peaceful liberation of our southern provinces.  It was one of the most significant epics in the history of Morocco and a milestone in the process of completing the territorial integrity of the Kingdom. 해마다 정기적으로 지역사회에 수준 높은 문화예술 공연을 제공해온 백석예술대학교(총장 윤미란)가 지난 29일 오후 7시 교내 백석아트홀에서 ‘지역주민과 함께하는 제29회 스토리가 있는 음악쉼터’를 개최했다. 코로나19로 인해 약 1년 만에 개최된 이날 음악쉼터는 백석예술대 대외협력처 주관으로 ‘비긴 어게인’(Begin Again)을 주제로 꾸려졌다. 다만, 사회적 거리두기에 따른 방역지침에 따라 현장 참여 인원을 소수로 제한한 대신, 유튜브로 실시간 생중계했다. 덕분에 980여 명의 관객들이 온라인으로 함께 참여해 감동과 힐링의 시간을 가졌다. 축사를 전한 백석예술대 윤미란 총장은 “일상으로의 회복이 간절한 요즘, 다시 일어나고자 하는 우리의 마음을 음악에 담아내기 위해 노력했다”며 “본 공연이 위드 코로나 시대를 살아가는 모두에게 작은 위로와 쉼이 되길 바란다”고 전했다. 이어 “백석예술대는 앞으로도 서초구는 물론 지역사회와 함께하는 문화예술 프로그램으로 주민들과 소통하는 공간이 되기 위해 더욱 힘쓰겠다”고 덧붙였다. 이에 따라 ▲기대 ▲행복 ▲희망 등 세 파트로 꾸려진 음악쉼터에서는 피아니스트이자 백석 팝오케스트라 지휘자로 활동하고 있는 백석예술대 음악학부 이명수 교수를 비롯해 가수 진정훈, 소냐, 노틸러스 및 밴드 COZ 등이 무대에 올랐다. 이들은 ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’와 더불어 ‘믿음의 고백’ ‘Volare’ ‘I will always love you’ ‘걱정말아요 그대’ ‘거위의 꿈’ 등 숱한 명곡들을 선보여 관객들의 뜨거운 박수갈채를 받았다. 본 공연을 총괄기획한 이명수 교수는 “오늘 우리는 세상적인 노래를 부르고 연주하지만, 그 마음의 중심에는 하나님이 있다”며 “그 진심이 여러분들에게 전해져 지친 마음을 달래고 잠시나마 소망을 품는 계기가 됐으리라 믿는다”고 전했다. 현장공연의 한 참석자는 “코로나19로 인해 예민하고도 바쁜 나날을 보내던 가운데 오랜만에 여유있는 시간을 갖게 돼 편안했다”며 “지역사회를 위한 수준 높은 공연들이 앞으로 더 많이 제공해주면 좋겠다”고 소감을 전했다. 온라인뉴스부 iseoul@seoul.co.kr

CJ뮤지컬은 오는 19일 ‘CJ뮤지컬 미츠 시네마’(CJ MUSICAL MEETS CINEMA) 시리즈의 첫 작품으로 영화 ‘보디가드’를 CGV압구정에서 상영한다고 10일 밝혔다.이 행사는 영화를 뮤지컬로 재창작한 작품을 영화로 만나 보는 상영회로, 전문가의 해설과 출연진의 라이브 무대가 곁들여진다. 이번에는 음악평론가 임진모와 가수 손승연이 출연한다. 손승연은 2016년 뮤지컬 ‘보디가드’ 아시아 초연 무대에서 ‘레이철 마론’ 역으로 뮤지컬 배우로 데뷔한 바 있다. 1992년 개봉한 영화 ‘보디가드’는 전직 대통령을 경호했던 보디가드와 세계적인 톱가수의 이뤄질 수 없는 사랑을 담은 작품이다. 할리우드 배우 케빈 코스트너와 실제 전 세계적인 인기를 누렸던 가수 고(故) 휘트니 휴스턴이 출연해 화제가 됐고, 영화 주제곡 ‘아이 윌 올웨이즈 러브 유’(I Will Always Love You)가 빌보드 싱글 차트에서 14주간 1위에 오르는 등 영화 OST도 큰 인기를 누렸다. 최근 주인공인 휘트니 휴스턴의 삶을 다룬 다큐멘터리 영화 ‘휘트니’가 화제가 된 가운데 오는 27일 재개봉을 확정했다. 이미 흥행성이 검증된 영화는 뮤지컬로 재탄생하며 다시 사랑을 받았고 내년 말 뮤지컬 ‘보디가드’의 앙코르 공연이 확정됐다. 중국의 한 20대 남성이 자신의 학교 선배에게 유자 999개로 공개적인 고백을 건네는 모습이 카메라에 포착됐다. 현지시간으로 지난 4일 오후 6시쯤, 중국 광둥성 광저우의 한 대형 쇼핑센터 앞에서는 보기 드문 진풍경이 벌어졌다. 유자 수 백 개가 하트(♥) 형태로 진열돼 있었던 것. 거대한 ‘유자 하트’를 만든 주인공은 현지 대학교에 다니는 남학생으로 알려졌다. 그는 총 999개의 유자로 대형 하트를 만든 것도 모자라, 999개의 유자에 일일이 사랑의 메시지를 적어 넣었다. 여기에는 “I Will Always love 柚(유자를 뜻하는 한자어로, 영어 ‘you’와 표기법이 같다)”, “널 향한 마음을 유자안에 넣어놓았어” 등의 애정어린 멘트 등이 포함돼 있다. 이 대형 유자 하트의 주인공은 같은 학교에 다니는 대학교 4학년인 ‘무무’(木木)라는 이름의 여대생. 평소 이 여학생이 가장 좋아하는 과일이 유자라는 것을 알고 있었던 남학생은 1년 여 간의 짝사랑에 종지부를 찍고 커플로 거듭나기 위해 이런 이벤트를 준비한 것으로 알려졌다. 여대생이 고백의 장소로 들어오자 남학생은 마이크를 잡고 노래를 부르며 그녀에게 한 걸음 한 걸음 다가섰다. 그리고는 “너를 알게 된 순간부터 좋아하게 됐다. 이렇게 많은 사람들이 보는 앞에서 고백하려고 한다. 내 여자친구가 되어 달라.”고 간청했다. 수많은 사람들의 눈과 카메라가 무무라는 여대생에게 쏠렸을 때, 그녀는 어렵게 대답을 내놓았다. 거절이었다. 그녀는 “난 널 좋아하지 않는다. 처음부터 지금까지 가장 좋은 친구라고 생각해왔다”면서 “유자는 여기에 남겨놓고 가겠다”며 서둘러 자리를 떠났다. 그리고 이 여성의 친구로 보이는 한 여성이 “무무가 여기 계신 분들은 유자를 공짜로 가져가셔도 좋다고 말했다”고 외치자, 이를 구경하고 있던 구경꾼들은 재빨리 유자 쟁탈전에 돌입했다. 결국 사랑의 세레나데는 실패로 끝났고, 매개체가 됐던 유자는 불과 2분 만에 낯선 이들의 차지가 되고 말았다. 네티즌들은 댓글을 통해 “학생이 무슨 돈이 있어서 유자 999개로 고백할 생각을 했는지 모르겠다”, “남학생이 큰 상처를 받았을 것 같다”며 다양한 의견을 내놓았다. 송혜민 기자 huimin0217@seoul.co.kr

?It is common for the authors to include epilogues, however, yours was especially sincere and full of countless thank you-s. Humans are quite similar in genetic aspects(you even mentioned that the reason Kenya became a powerful nation in track-and-field is because it did not lose the talented ones to other sports). Sport is a way of exploring the inner-conscience, so enjoy. Such conclusion seemed a little bit cliche-tic in the first place, pardon me, but as I thought about it more and more, it seems to be a really valuable conclusion. It has been already two years since you wrote the book. If you have the chance to write the epilogue once again, what are the changes that you would want to make? -Haha…well, I think maybe I would try to make that sentence a little less cliche! And I always appreciate feedback, so there is no need for pardon whatsoever. For me, sport is the ultimate lens through which to examine human biological diversity. You can watch the opening ceremony in Rio this summer, and there will be Michael Phelps next to a 1500-meter runner as they walk in, and Phelps will be 18cm taller, but both men will be wearing the same length pants, because of the bodytypes that are advantaged in their respective sports. I find that beautiful and remarkable, if a bit cliche. I really didn’t think so many people would be interested in the book, so I didn’t have an audience in mind so much when I wrote the epilogue, it was more sort of wrapping things up in my own mind. So that’s why I mentioned a wide range of characters from NBA players to Steve Jobs, and discussed the idea of genetic engineering for a perfect athlete. It was just addressing many different things I had been thinking about, almost like I was talking to myself. I think if I could do it again, I would have made a more explicit section of the epilogue where I said: “Here, in short, are aspects of this research that have most influenced how I work outside of sports,” and suggest how they might apply to other people. For example, when I’m trying to learn something new now, I sample a range of techniques first, and pay attention to my learning rate, or “trainability” as I call it in the book. It pays off to spend some time up front finding the method in which you are most trainable. You may be behind at first, but it’s the best way to go. And using some of the information about how athletes “chunk” information to make quick decisions, I’ve applied some of that to learning information quickly, and I can now memorize full hour-long lectures even though I don’t think I have a special memory. So I think I would have taken some time to give a bit more of the practical, utilitarian background. I would still like to do that! ?You worked as a researcher in Alaska near the North Pole, wrote articles while traveling on a yacht... you have been consistently involved in environment and sports-science. You are now working as a journalist for Propublica. Your TED lecture ‘Are Athletes Really Getting Faster, Better, Stronger?’ from 2014 was watched by a quite large number of people in Korea as well. You seem like a person who is consistently interested in new things and inflamed by new topics. Do you have a personal life moto? Is there a specific field that you are especially interested in and working on in these days? -When I lived on the boat, a large research vessel, I was actually doing science, not writing articles yet. I wasn’t a journalist yet, and still thought I would be a scientist. But the more science I did, the more I asked myself: “Am I the type of person who wants to spend my whole life learning or two things new to the world? Or am I the type who wants to learn things new to me more often?” I decided I was the latter, and later realized you really can connect dots that even the scientists haven’t, because they have to focus very narrowly. I jumped from being a scientist to a journalist, and then from all sorts of different jobs. I left a fulltime job in Washington D.C., to take a temporary six-month job as a fact-checker at Sports Illustrated. I don’t know that I have a motto, but just as the development of the best athletes involves diversification prior to specialization, I want my experience to be very wide early in my career. When my learning curve begins to flatten, I want to be somewhere else. That’s difficult, because the pressure is to create a brand and stick to the same thing. But I just can’t. I think we too often progress in life by continually moving more and more toward what we are comfortable with. I want to spend my entire life forcing myself to try things and engage with ideas that I don’t find entirely comfortable. It’s the same with physical training. If you lift the same weight the same number of times every day, you will maintain your muscle, but you won’t force it to change for the better. Right now, I just finished a long story about drug cartels in Mexico, which was a new field for me, and fascinating to understand how those organizations get very good at doing very bad things. It definitely made me wonder about how leadership is structured in organizations, so I’ve been reading some of the psychology about that. And I’m also taking a fiction writing class, because, again, I want to get out of my comfort-zone, and force myself to try a kind of writing that I’m not comfortable with. It’s working! ?Your book was selected as a New York Times bestseller. Moreover, the photo of your book with President Obama was a hot issue as well. I wonder, had the President ever mentioned about the book himself or wrote you an email or mentioned in his SNS about the book. -The President never wrote to me, as I think he probably has a pretty busy schedule! Interestingly, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice mentioned in an interview that she was reading The Sports Gene as well. I enjoyed that, because she and President Obama are from different political parties obviously, and I was glad to think that perhaps people with very different viewpoints might be interested in it. I did see one interview online where President Obama was speaking with a runner who visited the White House, and told her some things about talent, and it made me think he had definitely paid attention to what he read in my book, as it sounded like it was straight from the pages. ?There was this video of you having a heated conversation in MIT with Malcom Gladwell, the founder of 1 million-hours-law. Are you still in an argument with him? -He and I still do discuss it, because we run together. But we have become very friendly. That doesn’t mean we agree, but my feeling is that he has gravitated somehwat more toward the evidence I’ve presented. I give him a huge amount of credit for being willing to change his mind when presented with evidence. He contends that the point of the law or “rule,” as he phrased it, was to show the importance of hard and sustained work. But that was never in question among scientists in the area, and I think the way that it has been applied is often a mistake. As I noted in my book, the scientist who did the actual work that led to the law has been pretty upset at what the public thinks it is. So I hope I helped correct that for people who are interested, although I certainly can’t reach as many people as Gladwell. ?You answered that ‘Phelps will be 18cm taller(than EL GUERROUJ), but both men will be wearing the same length pants, because of the body types that are advantaged in their respective sports. Could you explain further about why is that ’beautiful and remarkable‘? -In the early part of the 20th Century, there was an idea that there was an ideal way for all humans to be, and that anything different from that was bad. It deviated by fault or error. Instead, now that we better understand biological variation, it’s clear that tremendous variation is an essential part of evolution. There is no “perfect form,” only those that fit more readily into one environment or task than another. As such, I see sports as a celebration of humanity‘s physiological diversity. Some people have asked me if all these specialized body types take away some of the magic of sports for me. On the contrary, I think sports is a grand stage for appreciating biological diversity. Sports are simply contrived environments that we’ve created to test our psychology and biology. To me, the wider the range, the more interesting, and the more power sport has to appeal to everyone. I feel the same way about culture. I love the Olympics because it mixes cultures on a scale I don‘t think is really replicated just about anywhere else, and I like to see how that manifests. In short: at times human diversity is divisive, but in sport, it’s part of the celebration of achievement. Who is Epstein? He was born in Chicago, Illinois on the 31st of January, 1980. He majored in Environmental science and astronomy in Columbia University. He worked as an environmental research worker in the Artic Circle near Alaska. He also worked at the a seismological laboratory and charted the submarine topography of the Mediterranean ocean. As a sport-illustrate senior contributor, he is a celebrated journalists who writes sports-science and Olympics stories through careful research and checking, such as breaking the story that the Yankees‘ Alex Rodriguez, the tycoon of baseball was tested positive for steroids. He included his experience of being a varsity track-and-fields runner with teammates who came from Jamaica and Kenya and of working in the sports scenes in his book ‘The Sports Gene’, 2013. President Obama’s picture of buying the book at the bookstore was sensational. Also, Condoleezza Rice, the former secretary of state also recommended her acquaintances to read the book. Now he is working at the public benefit media ‘Propublica’ as a journalist and recently covered the story of the Mexican drug cartel’s local relief activity. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in. 　Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. 　While headlines often focus on what‘s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. 　We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation. 　We believe all lives have equal value, and that includes the many more people who will live in future generations than live today. Our society has an obligation to invest now to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here. 　But right now, we don’t always collectively direct our resources at the biggest opportunities and problems your generation will face. 　Consider disease. Today we spend about 50 times more as a society treating people who are sick than we invest in research so you won‘t get sick in the first place. 　Medicine has only been a real science for less than 100 years, and we’ve already seen complete cures for some diseases and good progress for others. As technology accelerates, we have a real shot at preventing, curing or managing all or most of the rest in the next 100 years. 　Today, most people die from five things -- heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases -- and we can make faster progress on these and other problems. 　Once we recognize that your generation and your children‘s generation may not have to suffer from disease, we collectively have a responsibility to tilt our investments a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part. 　Curing disease will take time. Over short periods of five or ten years, it may not seem like we’re making much of a difference. But over the long term, seeds planted now will grow, and one day, you or your children will see what we can only imagine: a world without suffering from disease. 　There are so many opportunities just like this. If society focuses more of its energy on these great challenges, we will leave your generation a much better world. • • • 　Our hopes for your generation focus on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality. 　Advancing human potential is about pushing the boundaries on how great a human life can be. 　Can you learn and experience 100 times more than we do today? 　Can our generation cure disease so you live much longer and healthier lives? 　Can we connect the world so you have access to every idea, person and opportunity? 　Can we harness more clean energy so you can invent things we can‘t conceive of today while protecting the environment? 　Can we cultivate entrepreneurship so you can build any business and solve any challenge to grow peace and prosperity? 　Promoting equality is about making sure everyone has access to these opportunities -- regardless of the nation, families or circumstances they are born into. 　Our society must do this not only for justice or charity, but for the greatness of human progress. 　Today we are robbed of the potential so many have to offer. Partnering with experts is more effective for the mission than trying to lead efforts ourselves. 　We must take risks today to learn lessons for tomorrow. We’re early in our learning and many things we try won‘t work, but we’ll listen and learn and keep improving. 　• • • 　Our experience with personalized learning, internet access, and community education and health has shaped our philosophy. 　Our generation grew up in classrooms where we all learned the same things at the same pace regardless of our interests or needs. 　Your generation will set goals for what you want to become -- like an engineer, health worker, writer or community leader. You‘ll have technology that understands how you learn best and where you need to focus. You’ll advance quickly in subjects that interest you most, and get as much help as you need in your most challenging areas. You‘ll explore topics that aren’t even offered in schools today. Your teachers will also have better tools and data to help you achieve your goals. 　Even better, students around the world will be able to use personalized learning tools over the internet, even if they don‘t live near good schools. It provides access to jobs and opportunities if you don‘t live in a good economy. 　The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created. 　Yet still more than half of the world’s population -- more than 4 billion people -- don‘t have access to the internet. 　If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can also help hundreds of millions of children get an education and save millions of lives by helping people avoid disease. 　This is another long term effort that can be advanced by technology and partnership. It will take inventing new technology to make the internet more affordable and bring access to unconnected areas. It will take partnering with governments, non-profits and companies. It will take engaging with communities to understand what they need. Good people will have different views on the best path forward, and we will try many efforts before we succeed. 　But together we can succeed and create a more equal world. 　• • • 　Technology can’t solve problems by itself. Building a better world starts with building strong and healthy communities. 　Children have the best opportunities when they can learn. And they learn best when they‘re healthy. 　Health starts early -- with loving family, good nutrition and a safe, stable environment. 　Children who face traumatic experiences early in life often develop less healthy minds and bodies. Studies show physical changes in brain development leading to lower cognitive ability. 　Your mother is a doctor and educator, and she has seen this firsthand. 　If you have an unhealthy childhood, it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　If you have to wonder whether you‘ll have food or rent, or worry about abuse or crime, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　If you fear you‘ll go to prison rather than college because of the color of your skin, or that your family will be deported because of your legal status, or that you may be a victim of violence because of your religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　We need institutions that understand these issues are all connected. That‘s the philosophy of the new type of school your mother is building. 　By partnering with schools, health centers, parent groups and local governments, and by ensuring all children are well fed and cared for starting young, we can start to treat these inequities as connected. Only then can we collectively start to give everyone an equal opportunity. 　It will take many years to fully develop this model. But it’s another example of how advancing human potential and promoting equality are tightly linked. If we want either, we must first build inclusive and healthy communities. 　• • • 　For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do. 　Today your mother and I are committing to spend our lives doing our small part to help solve these challenges. I will continue to serve as Facebook‘s CEO for many, many years to come, but these issues are too important to wait until you or we are older to begin this work. By starting at a young age, we hope to see compounding benefits throughout our lives. 　As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. KBS2TV ‘해피선데이-남자의 자격’ 합창단원인 신보경은 26일 방송된 ‘남자, 그리고 송년의 밤’ 특집에서 휘트니 휴스턴의 1992년 곡 ‘아이 윌 올웨이즈 러브 유(I will always love you)’를 불렀다. 그는 노래 후반부 고음 파트까지 완벽 소화해 그간 보여주지 않았던 보컬리스트로서의 면모를 과시했다. ‘칼마에’ 박칼린과 ‘마왕’ 신해철도 그의 무대를 진지하게 감상했다. 함께 출연한 가수 조용훈은 노래 중간 사이다 병으로 섹소폰을 연주하는 퍼포먼스를 펼쳐 웃음을 줬다. 또 신보경의 무대에 완전히 심취한 정주리의 멍한 표정이 카메라에 포착되기도 했다. 노래가 끝나자 객석의 출연진들은 뜨거운 기립박수로 화답했다.
